Foty Fusion is a family ensemble that composes and performs a mix of many different types of music. They combine their Palestinian and Egyptian backgrounds, with their American identity, to produce a mélange of music with themes of social and political justice around the world and in the United States. The band consists of five members, a father and his four teenage children. Fuad Foty, the father, a Palestinian, has been in the performing profession for over twenty years. He plays the Oud (lute) and sings. Cherine (Violin, Vocals), Ziad (Keyboard, Piano, Percussion, Vocals), Fairouz (Cello, Vocals), and Nadine (Flute, Vocals) are his teenage children. The mother of the family, Mona El-Bayoumi, is an Egyptian artist, and the family resides in Washington, D.C. All four children have grown up in the United States and have attended public schools in D.C. They have grown up with a consciousness of the abundance of negative images of Arabs and the racism towards those in urban settings. Through their music they are attempting to educate and create awareness about their rich culture and the injustices occurring towards members of their culture. They are also trying to bring to light the injustices occurring here in their own country of the United States; to tell their story of disenfranchisement. Their first CD was entitled "Ahlam Al Ayla: Melodies of Love and Resistance", in which they performed traditional Palestinian songs. They have just released their second CD, a fusion of Arabic, Hip-Hop, Rap, Gospel, and Classical Music, all self-composed music and lyrics. This second CD "The Key of Life" addresses many great concerns from international issues to local issues. Some themes are The War in Iraq, urban violence, US interventionism, and the occupation of Palestine. Foty Fusion performs at concerts, demonstrations, social justice and community events, cultural events, parties, schools, and many other settings. They are very committed to making a difference in their local community, in their country, and in the world.
